Bold Beauty

16th December, 2015

I’m totally guilty of getting stuck in a makeup rut, tending to do the same, 5-minute makeup routine, day after day. However, between spending more time in Miami (where the prevailing vibe is far more colorful and high-glam than our other home, New York) and an influx of holiday party invitations, I decided it was time to test drive a few new tricks.

My friend Kristen knows much more about makeup than me, so I invited her over for an afternoon to try out Gucci’s latest beauty launches (and teach me a thing or two!). We started by designing a fresh everyday look for me, beginning with a base of Gucci’s Glow Foundation, a light dusting of Finishing Powder, a bit of Oriental Sienna Bronzer, and the Spicy Petal Blush.HolidayBeauty2On my lids, we used Gucci Eyeshadow in Sunstone – which Kristen had the brilliant idea of also using on my cheeks as a highlighter. I thought that was genius – I love being able to use one product in multiple ways! We used the Aristocratic Shadow Duo to shade my crease and corners, then defined my lash line with the Infinite Precision Liner and Infinite Length Mascara, both in Cocoa. A swipe of Ethereal Lip Laquer in Breathless finished the whole thing off. For me, this is the perfect program for everyday makeup: polished but natural, elevated but easy (and quick!) to recreate.HolidayBeauty3I love a sultry, smokey eye at night, so creating a novel version of that was next on my wish list.HolidayBeauty4For this look we played with Gucci’s Cosmic Deco Shadow Palette. I’m completely obsessed with this palette now – I love the silvery-olive tint of the upper right pigment (see below) – it’s enough of a twist on the smokey eye formula to feel fresh, while still keeping things chic.  For extra oomph, we lined both top and bottom lashes with the Infinite Precision Black Gel Eyeliner and Infinite Iconic Black Mascara.HolidayBeauty5Another evening look I love is a classic cat eye, and I have to say, hats off to Gucci’s Infinite Precision Gel Eyeliner for making this so DIY-able. It goes on smooth, is crazy easy to control and it does. not. smudge. Literally, the best eyeliner I’ve ever tried. I amped up this third look with Gucci’s Rose Dragee Lipstick, plus a layer of gloss in Exposure.HolidayBeauty6 HolidayBeauty7While I had the attention of a much more knowledgable friend, I knew I had to do one look that was totally outside my typical comfort zone – and the truth is, when I see super colorful eyeshadows on display, I always wonder WHO over the age of 15 is buying them?! Could I possibly pull off a parrot palette?! Well, color me converted.HolidayBeauty8With Kristen’s encouragement, I smudged Gucci’s Iconic Ottanio Gel Liner over my entire eyelid, using it to line my bottom lashes as well. We highlighted this with a fingertip-applied-pop of shimmery gold at the center of my eyelids, used a black pencil for major drama on my inner lashes, and a hearty swipe of black mascara for extra definition. Because this eye was so strong, we kept the lips neutral: a little lipstick in color in Ethereal, plus the Breathless gloss. I couldn’t believe how much I loved the look! I’m 100% recreating it for New Year’s Eve. Turns out, with beauty – as with fashion (as with life!) – all it takes to pull off a new you is having the guts to break out of your rut.
