Postcards from Franciacorta

17th June, 2015

by Erin Framel

On a chilly day in mid-May I hopped on a red eye flight across the pond to visit Franciacorta, a small but burgeoning Italian wine region that’s been gaining some serious momentum lately. I had to see for myself what all the fuss was about!

Nestled between the Alps and Lake Iseo, Franciacorta is a charming nook in Lombardy producing some of the world’s most prestigious sparkling wines. It’s on the lips of every chef, sommelier and wine aficionado and is quickly moving its way into the worldwide market. An hour outside of Milan, the region is tied to Italy’s fashion capital and thus draws an elite crowd of tastemakers and celebrities (George & Amal Clooney served Franciacorta at their wedding, #nbd).

Here, winemakers with an extraordinary vision are creating sparkling wines that rival France’s champagne, with a refreshing, crisp taste like satin on the tongue, aromas so complex that the wine is served in wide brimmed glasses instead of flutes, and an unmistakably Italian style.

I spent a long weekend exploring its cellars, wandering through its vineyards and sipping plenty of divine bubbly. Franciacorta is a place as beautiful, romantic and intoxicating as its wines. I fell deeply for both!

If heaven can be found on earth, this is most certainly it. Here’s my adventure at a glance! Stay tuned over the next week for more on where to eat, what to do and where to stay in this oh-so marvelous Italian oasis.
