Hooked On Couture

6th March, 2015

Back in September, the Chanel Couture collection was infamously in town for 48 hours. An esteemed visiting emissary! Its daytimes were spent in back-to-back appointments with clients, collectors, buyers and press ~ but as dusk settled in on day one, we had the chance to snatch up a few favorite silhouettes from the maison.

We cast India Salvor Menuez, a key spirit in New York City’s up-and-coming art scene, as our Botecelli-esque flower, imagining her sprouting up between a crack in the concrete streets, and we shot until the wee hours of the morning at Ann Street Studio. It was a magical evening, filled with dream clothes and a dream girl.

Once again this season, smack dab in the middle of New York Fashion Week and a horrendous blizzard, a new Chanel Couture collection swooped into town for the blink of an eye. Another overnight sitting? We couldn’t resist!

Again, we called upon a beautiful artist making a scene in this city of dreams: Margot, a violinist who’s breaking all the rules of her profession. Her collaborative performances as one half of Hooked On Dolls ~ in which she plays live violin riffs over musical partner Mia Moretti’s DJ sets ~ are legendary in the fashion world. Together, the two have traveled from Lower East Side clubs to the runways of Fashion Week to opening for Janet Jackson at the Louvre. They’re reinventing their genre and writing their own script ~ much like Coco Chanel herself, a woman who always played life to her own tune.

As snow swirled outside the studio that night, we shot Margot on a stark white set in the inkiest black looks of the Chanel Haute Couture Spring 2015 collection. As she pulled at the strings of her black violin, her dark silhouette shot across the bright stage like hastily drawn musical notes, skipping across the page. She was the embodiment of a song: poignant, haunting, ephemeral, eternal.HookedOnCouture2
