New York State Of Mind

23rd September, 2014

Artists and essayists, filmmakers and poets have long eulogized New York, and every word of it is true. There’s no place like this place. It’s not an easy city, so no one comes here accidentally. They come because they have a dream, and the bullheaded determination to pull that dream off. And so it’s a city of ambitious romantics, a buffet of epic successes and crushing failures, a melting pot of cultures, a town where the poorest poor and the richest rich shop at the same bodega. All the lines are blurred. It’s like living in a movie, every day. It beats you up but then it lifts you to the stars.

In New York, one always feels something extraordinary is about to happen ~ and usually it does. No other city offers such dizzying extremes, the constant commingling of expensive perfume and rotting garbage. It’s as loud as can be, loud enough to forget your thoughts or to be alone with them, whichever you need. It’s as generous as it is tough, demanding as good as it gives. It’s gritty as hell but spine-tinglingly beautiful. It is black clothes and a ‘don’t-mess’ edge; it is sexy, resilient and strong.

New York is our chosen home, our adopted family, and our truest true love. Inspired by the attitude of the streets and the freshest designer collaboration in town, this is our ode to the spirit of the city.

  • “New York is an ugly city, a dirty city. Its climate is a scandal, its politics are used to frighten children, its traffic is madness, its competition is murderous.

But there is one thing about it – once you have lived in New York and it has become your home, no place else is good enough.”

    ― John Steinbeck

  • “The city seen from the Queensboro Bridge is always the city seen for the first time, in its first wild promise of all the mystery and the beauty in the world.”

― F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby

  • “London is satisfied, Paris is resigned, but New York is always hopeful. Always it believes that something good is about to come off, and it must hurry to meet it.”

    ― Dorothy Parker

These photos are amazing! The styling is perfection and the models are gorgeous!

I especially loved your story about living in New York. I live in California right now and it’s my dream to live in New York and make it one day. This post has inspired me so much and expressed why I want to live there one day.

  • Love love love the styling–the nose rings and barely-there makeup together is on point. Also proving that you really, truly can’t go wrong with all-black.

The styling here is fire. And the link sends me to Kohl’s (which is currently under development). Please forgive the stupid question, if it is one, but are the clothes featured an actual Kohl’s collabo!

      Hey Portia,

Sorry to see the links aren’t working anymore. The clothes we shot for this editorial were all designed by Elie Tahari as a special collaboration with Kohl’s, which launches this Friday. Check back again then! We felt like the designer did a great job of capturing the spirit of New York in this capsule collection, which inspired us to create this story ~ our own ode to the spirit of the city. It all ties back to our ethos that true style doesn’t care if you’re wearing Kohl’s or couture!

  • It’s so interesting to see how environment can affect a designer! I like how you said that they were “inspired by the attitude of the streets.” It is a true testament because a lot of trends come from streetstyle!

  • This is a stunning style and gorgeous photos!
