While the holidays are a time to slow down and luxuriate in the embrace of family, friends and shared traditions, with a new year comes the promise of a fresh start, a clean slate, and a renewed appreciation for life’s endless possibilities. I am sincerely excited for the year ahead, and my mind is flooded with ideas for the continued evolution of this site, the kinds of stories we can tell, and the ways in which we share them. We have big plans in the works!

Attempting to innovate and chase my ambitious imaginings has been a hell of a lot easier since my younger sister and I began working together nearly one year ago. She and I make quite the team. Inspired by the specialness of that dynamic, we took a lot of looks at the beauty of sisterhood in 2013, highlighting the ladies of The New Potato and the designing duos behind Dannijo and Anndra Neen jewelry. Individually unique, together complete; the successes of these pairs of sisters are unquestionably linked to the intensity of their lifelong bonds.0106142|ABOVE| The sisters Kosann |BELOW| the designing duos behind Dannijo (left) and Anndra Neen (right) 0106143Sisters can be made by birth or by friendship, and this powerful phenomena is a topic that continues to inspire me. To kick off 2014, this week we’ll be taking a look at Corianna and Brianna Dotson ~ aka Coco + Breezy ~ identical twins who are shaking up the sunglass scene. Their edgy shades are collected by boundary-averse stars like Lady Gaga, Rihanna, and Nicki Minaj. 0106144|ABOVE| Coco + Breezy, as photographed by Nick Onken for Inked Magazine

Coco + Breezy’s style is defiantly gritty, but I was inspired to bring out a side of themselves they’d never seen before.  I wanted to explore the gentler persuasions of their hard-edged look, without compromising an iota of irreverence. Thus, Coco + Breezy were recast as Violet and Daisy Hilton, an extraordinary pair of Siamese twins who rose to fame in the 1930′s circus sideshow scene (say that five times fast!). Conjoined at the hip, the Hiltons’ life was fantastically colorful, encompassing degrading stints on freakshow circuits, vaudeville stardom, burlesque lows, silver screen successes, tempestuous lawsuits and a string of torrid, short-lived affairs and marriages. As they say, life is a cabaret!0106145|ABOVE| Violet + Daisy Hilton, conjoined twins and stars of the 1930′s vaudeville scene

To complete the transformation from daring Dotsons to the original sisters Hilton, Nick Onken and I took Coco + Breezy to Coney Island, to shoot them on that iconic boardwalk ~ which was serendipitously sprinkled with just-fallen snow. Like a new year on the calendar, a snow-covered seascape glistens with the promise of a fresher tomorrow. Speaking of tomorrow, I do hope you’ll check back then to enjoy the results of this creative collaboration. As the week continues, we’ll look behind the scenes at the making of this fashion fantasy, learn a thing or two about millinery, and get to know my newfound muses a bit better. Do stay tuned! The best is yet to come…
