Le Suiting

22nd November, 2013

You may recall that, a few weeks ago, I took part in a Google Hangout with a fun bunch of industry heavy hitters, hosted by Rachel Zoe. Moderator Joe Zee asked me if I was a little black dress kind of girl, and I answered honestly: not really. These days I’m much more of a little black suit kind of girl.LeSuiting2Deep down, I do delight in a fabulous frock ~ but they don’t hold the same sort of lasting investment power that a suit can command. Obviously, le suiting revolution began with Yves Saint Laurent’s infamous 1966 le smoking moment. In the nearly 50 years since, the look has never once waned in influence ~ proving an otherwise-unheard-of sort of staying power in the only-reliable-for-being-fickle fashion world.LeSuiting3I’ve always appreciated pieces with multiple uses, and a suit is the ultimate example of that. Its individual parts can be worn together or separately, in absolutely infinite iterations. But as divine as that versatility may be, you really can’t beat the original rendition. Black tuxedo jacket, gorgeously tailored trousers, and a crisp white shirt: it’s a combination that cannot fail ~ and Karen Millen’s interpretation of this classic is completely spot-on. I personalized mine with some favorite vintage brooches and a well-worn men’s belt, because sometimes the best thing to do with something practically perfect is to muddy it up a bit. After all, even the most time-honored traditions can benefit from a twist!LeSuiting4|WEARING| Westward\Leaning sunnies, Karen Millen jacket, shirt and pants, vintage brooches and belt, Schutz shoes |PHOTOGRAPHY| by Mark Iantosca
