Travel Diary: Hong Kong

27th September, 2013

HongKong1We arrived in Hong Kong in the earliest hours of a Sunday morning, descending upon the city long before the sun. Delirious, disoriented, but dizzyingly excited, Zach and I made our way to the Upper House Hotel, as inviting an oasis as I’ve ever experienced. HongKong2The rooms were ingeniously designed, laid out like a figure-eight formed of connecting squares: one enormous square for the bedroom and another for the bath, both with decadent wraparound windows overlooking Hong Kong, a modern city built into lush green hills and surrounded by blue harbours. HongKong3 HongKong4I washed the long flight away with hot jasmine tea and an even steamier bath, luxuriating in the tub as the sun slowly rose over the surrounding landscape. HongKong5 HongKong6I’ve been fortunate to stay in many beautiful hotels around the world, but this might be my favorite yet. It was the definition of what luxury should be: never flashy or ostentatious, but comfortable in a quiet, thoughtful way that allows you to forget you’re not actually at home. From the service to the food to the design scheme, it felt like living in a fine cashmere sweater: so delicious, and so dearly appreciated by these two weary travelers. HongKong7HongKong_8Once morning had officially arrived, we set out to explore the city streets, stopping first for strong coffees and sweet quiches at agnès b. cafe, where our eyes were awakened with a rainbow of pretty pastries, overflowing florals and charmingly mismatched tile floors. Zach designs restaurants, and the search for inspiration never stops for either of us. Exciting ideas are everywhere! HongKong9 HongKong10 HongKong11Continuing the quest for eye candy, we winded our way along Gough Street, an area famous for its concept shops. HongKong12 HongKong13The day grew hot and humid quite quickly, and we boarded a ferry for a short jaunt across the harbour. I did my best to keep cool in a T by Alexander Wang oxford, Ray-Ban clubmasters, and shorts from Zara. HongKong14We struggled laughingly through an indecipherable dim sum menu, then ended the afternoon with a cold Sauvignon Blanc at the infamous Penninsula Hotel, the effects of which ~ combined with staggering jet lag ~ forced us into an absurdly early bedtime. HongKong15 HongKong16We’d come to Asia for a number of reasons, chief among them being an assignment to explore and report on China’s rich jewelry culture, a journey that began on our second day in Hong Kong. HongKong17To roam the city streets and stores, I wore a nubby, knit jacket by Rebecca Taylor and a slip dress by Sachin + Babi, accessorizing with ages-old Lanvin for H+M sunglasses, the Monica Rich Kosann locket that I never, ever take off, a gold Pamela Love cuff, Isabel Marant shoes and my very favorite carryall. HongKong18The sights of the day ranged drastically, from colorful local markets to enormous shopping malls to the intimate home studio of an internationally acclaimed calligraphy artist. So much more, coming soon… HongKong19|PHOTOGRAPHY| byZachary Lynd & Kelly Framel
