The Indonesian Influence

2nd July, 2013

IndonesianInfluence1Traveling provides me with so much inspiration. Transporting myself into another culture, time zone, way of life, and atmospheric aesthetic always results in evolution. In large and small ways, every experience changes my mindset and frame of reference ~ and lately, I’ve really been letting my frolics in Bali inform my creative mood.
IndonesianInfluence2It’s already manifested influence over the clothes I want to wear, and that’s what brings me to THESE SHORTS. These shorts come with a little story. It starts with a certain well-dressed man in my life, who likes wearing sarongs but laments that a gentleman can’t get away with them at dinner. I think the look is actually quite chic on a man, and the stylist in me knew there had to be a solution to his sartorial predicament. Then I spotted these shorts, in black, on the waiters at Fire in the W Hotel Seminyak. I loved that they so elegantly combined both the practicality of shorts and the breezy flourish of a sarong. I knew I had to find out who made them and buy some for my guy! No one in the restaurant seemed to know, but Victoria Wadwa, our incredible British-born local guru, vowed to help me find out. It took 3 days of determined search to track down Indonesian designer Dwi Iskandar, who then hopped on a little island puddle-jumper to meet me.IndonesianInfluence3I imagined my gentleman friend wearing them in black with a suit jacket for summer’s more elegant evening affairs, and in white with a loose linen shirt for casual situations. Of course a patterned pair would also be needed just for fun, and would come in the form of an ikat picked up at a nearby market. As I began detailing this plan to Dwi (who custom-made every pair from measurements, and had them finished within days!), it dawned on me how jealous I’d surely be of these awesome shorts, and thus realized I simply had to order three identical pairs for myself. Actually, my ikat colorway is a lot girlier than his; but otherwise, samesies. I’m thinking summer uniform.
