From Morning To Night

6th March, 2013

Like I mentioned on Monday, my life lacks any semblance of a routine. I guess I must like it that way, because I do believe we are each responsible for the course our lives take, whether consciously or not. Recently, however, I’ve been craving a bit more order. I’ve taken a new studio space, brought my sister on to help manage my projects, and am thinking a lot about what I want my future to look like. How can I improve on past performance? How will I turn my personal problems into productivity? How shall I push myself creatively today? In taking a new office and growing my team, I’m allowing myself to dream bigger. I’m also forcing a bit more regularity into my reality. That includes a new daily commute……and a welcome change of scenery. Our work space is right off Bryant Park, and though it’s all iced over now, I’m really looking forward to lunching by the fountain come springtime.I’ve also had to start toting a lot more stuff around town than ever before. I like to work from home in the early mornings, where it’s quiet enough that I can write. After a few hours of that, I pack up all my gear and head into the studio to check in on our little team. Mornings turn into afternoons turn into evenings pretty quickly, so besides my laptop and iPad, I’ve usually got to bring a change of shoesbagjewelry, and makeup, for nighttime touchups. In the fashion biz, cocktails parties are part of the job.I walk past the Alice + Olivia store every morning on my way into work, and as a welcome-to-the-neighborhood gesture, they sent over this cute snakeskin tote, which has become my go-to carryall. I love that it comes with a companion clutch, which I stash makeup in during the day and then use as an evening bag come dusk.

It’s a good thing we’re so close! Bringing her into the fold has been a game-changer for me; there’s no one I can better trust to anticipate my aesthetic preferences, manage my best interests, or maintain my mood swings. She is the perfect yang to my yin.Like all busy people, I struggle in trying to keep up with it all. Running a business is challenging for me; I just want to create and not worry about all the other stuff: the schedules and deadlines and emails and pitch decks and contracts and client reports make me so anxious. Erin helps me keep it all together. She also forces me to get out in the evenings, when I’d be perfectly happy staying at work till midnight every day.But all work and no play makes for a dull creative soul, so off I go (every once in a while)!|WEARING| Adrienne Landau hat, DVF blouse (previously seen HERE), sweater from Last CallTimo Weiland coat (by morning), Primary coat (for evening), DL1961 jeansAlice + Olivia bagsZara boots (for day), Sigerson Morrison shoes (by night), Phillips House jewelry|PHOTOS| by Jeremy James

  • Will be interesting to see how you design your office!

Great office and location. I’d rather work till midnight than go out these days too…

Love this little peek into your daily life and office! What a great addition with your sister, I’m sure it’s wonderful getting to work with someone who is family and knows you well. That sweater is incredible, by the way – such a stunning piece!

    Perfect! I like ur blog**))

  • Megan

that alice + olivia tote is perfect. i probably have too much order in my life which really tends to stunt my creative soul, so ill take a little of the messy spontaneity you left behind and you can steal a little of my dreary consistency. then ill steal your outfit please xo

  • Absolutely stunning and a very exciting venture for you. I love your big fur hat, it seems mysterious almost!

  • V

    Snakeskin?! unfollow.

    • Anon

It’s actually snake-printed leather, not snakeskin. I clicked the link to check it out 🙂

  • Margaux Shops For You

Lovely post, it’s great to have a little insight into your daily routine. The blouse is so pretty. You are so lucky to be working with your sister, I can’t think of anything nicer than that, would love to work with mine 🙂

  • Charity Griffin

The colors on the bag are pretty amazing. I have to say.

  • janet

  • Such a great post! I love the tote you use to get you from day to night. xo Megan

    My jewelry blog:

  • I love the relationship you share with your sister. It’s quite similar to me and my sister as well! Love your last shot.

  • loovee! u should have your own petit reality show 😛 .

love the products you shown! and so in love with your furry hat!

  • Congratulations on the new space!

  • The styling is GREAT! From the hat, to the jacket to that lovely bag! I love that you shot in the subway.

A new cold weather outfit post is up on Local & Opulent. Hopefully there won’t be too many more days that I will need my giant scarf!

  • Malibu PR Gal

The ensemble is super chic – love the whole look – edgy, flirty, sexy – you successfully managed to get it all in one amazing outfit! Unfortunately I am so spoiled living in Malibu, there is no way I could commute into the city. I lived in the thick of it for many years. Thankfully my interns are local, motivated – all of this with a view of the ocean : ) The best of both worlds. An office space helps you think outside the box – changing work environments is always a plus in the creative department. Congrats on the growth! That’s awesome!

  • I also work with a bit of a non-traditional schedule, so I understand the need for more structure sometimes! It’s cool that you have your sister on board to help you out with managing things – you two seem to balance each other out pretty well. Can’t wait to see more of the studio once you’re all moved in!

  • monkeyshines

    fascinating simple lookst!

  • mulberry&melrose

congrats on the continued growth! i love this snapshot of “a day in the life”!

  • Alicia

Love!! Your layers and textures rock. I keep pinning your posts!

  • Chickadee

This post saddens me. I usually love your style and aesthetic, but the fur is just unnecessary. Seriously, educate yourself on what these animals go through so that you can wear them on your head and your sweater. It’s revolting.

    • Emily

I agree! Kelly, you have such an influence over so many people, and if you chose fashionable, faux options, you could really make a difference for the animals 🙂

  • Jennifer

Only you could pull off that hat and look fierce!

    xo Jennifer

  • Dominique Kostolny

You should do a day in the life post… I think that readers would love it!

    • I totally agree! I would love the read a day in the life post.

  • Marianna Drumond

to be honest i envy you, i liked a lot of your blog and how you want to grow… anyway, i think that you have had the most awesome idea by calling your sister to work with you, work with family is always better, someday i’ll have the same taste that you have i’ll wear this beautiful clothes and acessories, and i’ll be as indenpendent as you are, your blog helped me, thank you.

  • jax

  • Valerie Yvonne
  • Tiffany

“we are each responsible for the course our lives take, whether consciously or not”. how republican of you. you might want to tack on some acknowledgement of the fact that not everyone is as lucky and blessed (and white) as you, that some people are born into war and starvation and don’t have the luxury of directing the course of their lives. otherwise you just sound ignorant.

    • We can not chose the way we born neither the situations, but we can always chose how to face them.

  • Lust Covet Desire

Can’t wait to see more pics of the new workspace!

  • Jo

Let me start by saying that I’m a big fan. But I must say over the past year your pictures have become way too staged Kelly. It seems like your blog is loosing its authenticity, which is something that I used to love so much as it is hard to come by in the fashion world.

  • Jo

As I just refreshed this post I notice that my comment about your blog loosing its authenticity was deleted. That action just reinforced my point.

  • Elizabeth C

The Alice & Olivia bag is Gorgeous – wear it well :)!

    hugs, elizabitti

  • furrvisions

Hope you’re taking the FERRY to Manhattan. Such a chic way to commute from WBurg.

  • vivienne

You are such a beautiful woman.

But, please stop making that face where you pucker out your top lip to make it look fuller. It looks like you’re trying too hard. You don’t need to try at all – you are stunning.

OHH!!! you Fabulous Kelly I would really love for you to have a TV show because you are meant to be that MAJOR!!!

  • I love your writing style and your dress sense is fabulous.

I just read two negative comments which really annoyed me but as their authors are clearly narrow-minded and misinformed I will refrain from responding. I will say this however, unless you are a vegan who never wears leather or wool it might be a good idea not to comment on the morality of wearing fur.

  • gaby

Hmm sorry, but what is it that you DO?
