Some days, a girl’s got to pull out all the stops. Back when I was an eveningwear designer, we worked under a certain code: we knew our clients would be wearing our clothes mostly to gala dinners, so they’d need to look as amazing in motion as they did at a dinner table ~ and of course these ladies would always want the gowns to be designed to best showcase their diamonds. Recently, I was reminiscing about that old rulebook, as I myself required a look that would work well well from the waist up ~ but I needed to highlight my ideas, rather than any riches.
The day began with a holiday breakfast at Tiffany (pretty darn fancy, I’ll admit!), then continued into one pitch meeting after another ~ meaning I spent much of it sitting in intimidating board rooms, humbly presenting my crazy dreams to prospective clients. It’s a sometimes frightening enterprise, and I was grateful to have found a dress that ~ especially from the waist up ~ oozed creativity and confidence. I couldn’t afford to break a sweat; I needed it to stay sturdy and unwrinkled, as I left the house at 7:45am and wouldn’t be home again until after 10pm. When I’m hard at work, I need to know my clothes are also able to go the distance. Fashion can be a fantastic ally!
