Inspired by the gauntlet of social independence thrown down by the beatniks, the hippies of the 1960s pushed their radical cultural inheritance to new extremes. The Sixties were more than a decade ~ they were an attitude, a societal revolution, a state of mind and a lifestyle experiment that would leave us forever changed.
These were the days of the flower children, who peacefully espoused free love, communal living, and gender equality. They wove flowers through their hair and dropped acid and made life an art in an altered plane of consciousness. The world of their future was like an open road, and in it they saw endless, psychedelic possibilities.
On a collective vision quest for mind expansion, they dropped out and dreamt of turning the whole world on ~ if not to drugs, then to beauty, peace, honesty, and fun. It seemed as if The Summer of Love could stretch on forever.
Contrasting the florid designs of the 50′s, the elegant simplicity of the 1963 Lincoln Continental set the tone for a generation seeking a more minimalistic way of living, eschewing excess and joyriding toward a utopian tomorrow.
This society of the brave inspires us still to this day. They’ve taught us to think independently but live communally, to embrace life’s strange and magical possibilities, and to love freely, deeply and openly. Love is all you need.
