As I mentioned HERE, Jason Wu‘s recent Spring 2013 show had my friend and seat mate Jamie and me gasping and leering each other in the great agony of obsession. It was everything. We loved the racy overtures, the graphic palette, the knowing romanticism, and most especially, we loved the hair. The models all wore a hybrid lacquered-finger-wave meets spinal-cord-enhancing french braid situation, and it was so, so chic. The look was devised by superstar hairstylist Odile Gilbert ~ and luckily for me, my personal hairstylist and friend Bethany (aka B!) Brill is Odile’s first assistant and was therefore one of the key artists involved in Wu’s backstage preparations. I texted her immediately after the show: could she come over a few days later and recreate the style for Jamie and me to wear to Lady Gaga’s masquerade ball?! I held my breath until she thankfully said yes.
There was something very therapeutic about having one’s hair braided so tightly to the head; having it done felt like a nontraditional sort of massage.
Another friend, FLIRT! makeup artist Porsche Cooper, came over as well to help get us prepped. We were headed to a masked ball, after all ~ one that was hosted by the queen of costumery. We needed a LOOK.

Jimmy Choo sent over a few bag and shoe options for us to choose from for the evening. It was a major act of restraint on Porsche’s part to not run off with the whole lot.

Dresses were lent to us by the ever-gracious, outrageously generous Prabal Gurung ~ a man who is as talented as he is kind-hearted. It was the last night of Fashion Week, and we wanted to go out with a bang, like urban butterflies on their final flight.

To finish it all off, I ordered black flower corsages from Sprout (my favorite florist), which we tied around our necks for a Victorian touch. They seemed to communicate the appropriate aura of delicate and dangerous ~ and that’s what we were going for, I guess.
