On our third day in Marrakech, we dialed down the glamour but amped up the economy with a serious shopping excursion in the city’s psychedelic souk.
Our spending spree began at Palais de la Menara, an exquisite emporium offering the most beautiful jewelry and furnishings that we saw in the duration of our trip.
Jamie was on the hunt for a large area rug for her new photo studio, and the shop’s proprietor was the perfect gentleman to guide us through the selection process. The Moroccan people take great pride in the craftsmanship of their carpets, and he patiently educated us in the intricacies of the different variations and weaves available.
We spent hours sipping tea and pondering the possibilities, and in the end she chose one for her home (above), and one for the studio (below). The experience of getting to better understand this art form only increased the already-obvious beauty of each.
I must admit, I was pretty pleased by how well my jeans (which I also wore HERE) coordinated with the occasion!
After Jamie’s rugs had been rolled up and readied to be shipped to their new home, we really ventured out into the depths of the souk ~ the massive, mostly open-air market at the center of the city.
For sale in the souk, we discovered all sorts of delicious loot ~ and we learned a few things about how to drive a hard bargain. Surprisingly, even with a lifetime of experience in shopping at flea markets, I was initially timid about negotiating with the locals. Luckily, my companion was a natural haggler!

We were primarily researching + shopping for an upcoming project, so you’ll have to wait until that’s unveiled to see what we found ~ but suffice it to say we doubled our luggage!
We also discovered that Morocco is home to the most mind-blowing olives on earth, so naturally that night began with a hunt for the dirty martinis to match. As such, we found ourselves back at La Mamounia…
…for which I changed into: reworked vintage earrings, a Vena Cava frock, a Naeem Khan shawl, that Primary clutch from Day 1 and some Elie Tahari heels.
Jamie slipped into a pair of earrings scouted that morning at the souk, a Halston Heritage gown, and Miu Miu shoes:
