all you need

My younger sister will soon be graduating college and embarking on the job interview process. She recently asked me what three pieces she should buy to ready her wardrobe for that endeavor, and it’s a question I’ve also frequently received from readers. I’ll give you all the same advice I gave her. Instead of purchasing several items, pool your funds together and get the one thing that will prepare you for anything: Helmut Lang‘s wool tuxedo blazer (I’m wearing it in the above image):

Jackets are easily my favorite clothing item, and I’ve bought countless basic black blazers before. But I’ve never found one that’s as radically reinvigorating for your wardrobe as this. Its unique, sculpted shape makes it invariably versatile; the raised back works with nearly every silhouette. It can go quite casual, or super-suited. It works with skirts; it works with pants. It’ll make whatever dresses you already own instantly interview-appropriate. It’ll make a very ‘day’ ensemble look cocktail-appropriate (and we all know that’s when the best networking opportunities arise!). I’ve even worn mine to black tie affairs. At $575, it’s not exactly cheap, but after having seen how useful it’s been in my own wardrobe, I’d happily pay double!!UPDATE: can’t afford to invest in the real thing? an eagle-eyed reader tipped me off to this more affordable facsimile!

    Great style
    like that glittering pants!

  • Fashion On Duty

    This blazer is amazing.
Totally with you on this one – such a great piece is worth an investment and shows some great style and individuality without being over the top for an interview.

If you guys are interested in what to wear for work in somewhat more conservative work environments while still being stylish you might love to have a look over at my own blog where I am discussing just this 😉
Would love to have your opinions!

  • Courtney

How is the sizing for the blazer? I am between a 2 and 4… should I order up?

  • Elizabeth

It's beautiful, that's for sure. However, $575 seems WAY out of a college graduate's price range.

  • Ana Viguri

I have a blazer exactly like this from H&M;, and itÂŽs only 30 $!!

  • Anonymous

I agree with everyone that this is a great blazer. However, I've got to go with Elizabeth on this one… $575 seems pretty far out of a college student/grad's price range. Also, what about a second interview? They'd need a good second outfit, as well, and I wouldn't recommend wearing the same jacket again. I love the piece and think you're spot on that it is a great investment and very versitile, but definitely not what someone without a job (yet) should buy when preparing for interviews.

  • Andrea

Love the way it's cut in the back.

  • TrendsInLife
  • House of Avandan

    Great jacket!

    A jewelry blog.

  • Styling Black

such a great blazer… I have it and wear it all the time

  • Anonymous

I love the jacket, but it would really depend on what kind of jobs you were applying to. In more conservative fields, like law, it's better to go with a more traditional suit (jacket + skirt for women).

  • Caitie

it's always smart to invest in pieces you will wear numerous times rather than dishing out some money here and there on pieces that aren't as useful. It's worth the money!

  • Dina

so cute:) a dress suite always work…
    chic…… 🙂

    visit greece… its amazing

  • Gabi BarbarĂĄ

    So elegant! Love it!!!

It is a great jacket indeed, however, it doesn't strike me as a formal interview jacket. I guess it depends on the job as well. But as an attorney, I can assure you that this jacket would be inappropriate for legal job interviews.

  • molliee

    I need this asap! ahh!

  • Giada

Generally I prefer longer jackets but this one is really beautiful!

  • Satin And Salt

Sometimes its worth it to buy one luxe item verse multiple items that aren't as amazing.

  • Ravenna Moreira
  • Deborah Piana Agostinetti

    Easy and chic!!

    You look stunning.
& the blazer is so special. I am always seachring for the perfect blazer but i have not found it yet.

  • Andrea

God this jacket is gorgeous!!! I need that one!!! 🙂
    Wonderful and Marvelous

  • Cassie Lee
  • Lena
  • Haute Eyes

Love this blazer!! Must get ASAP!!

  • Anonymous

Definitely a cute (but extremely expensive) jacket, but as the others have mentioned, it would not be appropriate for many more professional fields (like, as someone mentioned, the legal field)

  • Ally

Blazers can either be great or extremely unflattering but this one has just the perfect details and shape! Great piece to have for going off into the real world 🙂

    xoxo, Ally

http://fashionartingenuity.blogspot.comHey you guys, I am an aspiring entertainer and designer, so I decided to make this blog.  It is not much, it only has two posts, because I have been so busy making an outline of what exactly I wanted on it. So, I guess you could say that I need some constructive critisism. Anyways, could you guy stake a look and tell me exactly what I need on it? I would really appreciate it, thanks! The link is at the top.

I have an obsession with blazers – a good one is totally worth the splurge.
