{ the glamourai } for schick

today i am so excited to tell you all about my latest collaboration (and most unique creative challenge to date): the glamourai for schick intuition!!

a few months ago, schick approached me about designing limited edition skins for their super-luxe intuition naturals razor. at first, i feared this was too far outside of my purview ~ i am certainly comfortable designing clothes and accessories, but product design on this scale is another story entirely. then, i remembered an inspirational quote from olivier theyskens, who said (of his move from luxury houses like rochas and nina ricci to the far more affordable theory), that he felt capable of designing anything from a glass to a cellphone. i thought (with arguably unearned arrogance): well then, so can i! from there, it occurred to me that nearly every person who reads this blog probably uses a razor ~ and wouldn’t we all like to have the prettiest one possible? that’s when i started getting really excited about this endeavor, accepted schick‘s challenge, and got right to work.
{ above: the glamourai for schick intuition naturals // from left to right: le love, le plume & le fleur }

i loved the curvaceous shape of the intuition razor ~ it reminded me of the fluid lines of art nouveau, as seen through a pop-art lens. so i dug into my library and pulled out my favorite biba book. after all, biba set the standard for pop nouveau in the sixites and seventies, blending fashion, decor, and bold product design to create an all-encompassing lifestyle juggernaut ~ and i think their attitude and aesthetic are still as fresh as ever.

my inspirational starting place established, i holed myself up in the studio and sketched my way through an entire night, coming up with dozens of ideas by sunrise. i couldn’t believe how much fun i was having, imagining ways to fill the razor’s hourglass shape with color and pattern and drama!! i wore out several pens (and fingers!) in the process, in the end submitting my top 12 favorites to my friends at schick, who in turn selected their top 3:

now i want to hear what YOU think! head over to schick intuition‘s facebook page to let us know which design you like best (voting will remain open until friday, may 27th). the winning style will be put into production for spring 2012 ~ then sold in thousands of shops around the world!

best of all, everyone who votes will be entered to win one of three prize packs, containing my personally selected summer essentials: a diane von furstenburg beach tote, missoni towel, karen walker sunnies (the same style i wore HERE), versace silk scarf (wear it as a turban!), and schick intuition naturals razor. bonne chance everybody ~ i can’t wait to see which one wins!!

Congratulations, but! how sustainable are these products? Disposable razors? I use a beautiful vintage safety razor, designed to be elegant and simple but to last. The blades are cheap and recyclable. I think there has to be a line drawn somewhere. At a certain point we're not celebrating beautiful things we're just indulging in needless production and consumerism.

(and it's pretty heteronormative to assume everyone who reads this blog uses a razor anyway)

Regardless, a neat opportunity and if there's got to be a lot of stuff in the world it's smart of companies to involve artists, even if they're just capitalizing off of a certain trend or lifestyle.

Congratulations on this awesome project, Kelly! I like le plume the most but was really happy to read that your referred to Biba for inspiration for designing le love! I actually met Barbara Hulanicki at an event she sort of hosted during Sleepless Night a couple of years ago, she's still cool! Let us know which design wins!! xo

  • here we go…

What is going on? I agree with Sara.
The commercial industry is leading bloggers on just to capitalize. not to mention giving people a false idea that they can get 'rich and famous' on the internet too. These look like any product you could get at Target. People buying razors to trim their pubes are going to give a flip about this blog or that you spent hours sketching what looks like a cheap window decal. I hope they paid you a boat load to do this because i see no benefit otherwise.

  • Anonymous

I love all of the 'collaborations' and 'projects' bloggers do now. where is the talent…someone else makes the clothes you consume, someone else takes your picture, and you sign on the line when someone else hands you a ready-made 'project'. i'm in the wrong racket.

wow you're simply amazing and multi talented.
    go girl! :)

while i like your sketches and the original content on your blog very much, i also have to second those who referenced "selling out doing those cooperations".
it's always just MOREMOREMORE money for the bigwigs, using you and other bloggers of recognition to promote buying heaps and heaps of their stuff.

i hope they pay you handsomely.

I like your blog very much, Kelly, but will have to agree with the minority here: This leaves a sour taste in my mouth.

I can't articulate how strange a feeling it is to see this–and to read peoples' excitment in regard to it.

So I'll just leave it there. And kindly remind you that I do enjoy your blog–but didn't appreciate the messaging here. You're talented, no doubt, and I feel a bit sad for you that you have sunk to this level.

Bring it back up. And we, the strangely small minority, can do our best to put this behind us.

    Hi Kelly,

I wonder if anyone has pointed out that "plume" and "fleur" are feminine nouns, and therefor should be referred to as "la plume" and "la fleur"?

I get that these are supposed to be fun titles (le love!) but it really bugs me when words from other languages are swiped for their exotic-ness and no one bothers to understand their use properly. I can tell you that to a native French speaker the error is glaring and to me kinda reeks of unprofessionalism, and lazy French fetishism.

It's probably too late, but I wish that before these go into mass production they could be renamed! Put your name on a better thought-out, professional product.

  • Friendly Francophone

I love "le plume," though I'd definitely rename it "la plume" to be grammatically correct. "Le" is not only the incorrect article, it's also masculine, which doesn't have any place on a product marketed exclusively toward women.

Ditto "le fleur" if it wins – it should also be "la fleur."
