{ on short hair }

as i’m slowly experimenting with letting my hair grow out a bit (and all the awkwardness that entails), i’ve been thinking more and more about my long-term relationship with cropped coifs. wearing one’s hair like this certainly forces you to rethink your style, your posture, and your confidence ~ every day. one glamourai reader turned me on to this piece by joan juliet buck on the topic, which succinctly summarizes so much of the experience of living without long locks (excerpt below).

{ above: iphone photo from this trip to las vegas }
“with short hair you begin to crave pearl necklaces, long earrings, and a variety of sunglasses. and you brush your teeth more often. short hair removes obvious femininity and replaces it with style. when it starts growing out a little and losing its style, you have to wear sunglasses until you can get it to the hairdresser. that’s why you need a variety. short hair makes you aware of subtraction as style. you can no longer wear puffed sleeves or ruffles; the neat is suddenly preferable to the fussy. you eye the tweezers instead of the blusher. what else can you take away? you can’t hide behind short hair… you may look a little androgynous, a little unfinished, a little bare… but your face is no longer a flat screen surrounded by a curtain: the world sees you in three dimensions.”

lovely excerpt! i used to have my hair pixie short, but it didn't work for me (i have REALLY broad shoulder and a tiny little 'pin like' head), it took 4 years to grow into a bob, as my hair grows at a glacial pace! le sigh! your hair is so iconic on you though! keep the coif short!

I shaved my head two summers ago and had NEVER had short hair before then…it was definitely a baptism by fire in accessorizing ;) I'm just now letting my hair grow out beyond super short pixie and I'm finding it a much more enjoyable experience than I thought I would….all the different stages are kind of fun! I can literally have a different style everyday :)

I couldn't agree any more with your post… I cut my hair 6 months ago (to go natural) and I have definitely found myself feeling more exposed and more experimental with jewelry and style… I'm growing it out but I've learned to embrace it for what is is now!!

I'm doing a post on my hair… and this couldn't have come at a better time!

    Stay Blessed…

Awesome quote…"short hair removes obvious femininity and replaces it with style…subtraction as style…". Yes, of course! That is exactly how it goes!! It can be a tricky path to follow.

I love this! The common reaction to my short hair is "it must be so easy in the morning!" And as this excerpt above shows, no, it's not easier, you just spend less time on your hair. You now worry about your eyebrows, whether your earrings are overwhelming your face, showing off your neck – and suddenly your face-washing routine becomes even more imperative because a blemish is so much more obvious when you've got very little to distract from it…

  • http://styleodyssey.blogspot.com/ Style Odyssey

i've read this piece before, and find it to be absolutely true!
i've had short hair for about 3 years now and really wonder what took me so long (no pun intended) to go short. i will never go back to long, for i'm a short hair girl!

i'm curious to see where you go with your hairstyle. the crop really suits your lovely face and your style!

  • https://profiles.google.com/115551949030520385861 Francia S

I think short hair takes courage and discipline! With short hair there's no place to hide, your face is on display 24/7. I used to wear it short for a long long time and it took me over two years to grow it to medium length… I loved to experiment with eye make-up back then.
I love your look and your style. I have seen very few women who actually look beautiful as you do with short hair. But I really wonder what you'd look like with long hair…

wow what an interesting quote! very thought provoking. I would agree to some extent but some people aren't meant to pull off short hair the way you are able to. Although sometimes short just looks beautiful, as on you.

I find that I see short-haired gals as more stylish..so I love this quote! Unfortunately..I've been told all my life (by different people) that if it wasn't for my "hair" (long and blonde) I wouldn't be attractive. I do change the color to others dismay. But..instead of having "style" I feel have hair?! You rock the cropped 'dos!!

  • http://www.blogger.com/profile/10173800024702128610 Robin

I may have to use that quote lol. Every single sentence is on point. I remember the first time I buzzed my hair my bf at the time made the comment that my curves seemed to be more pronounced since the big chop. Needless to say, we both loved it. Even though I have so much fun with wigs and changing my look up, I will always be a short haired chick underneath.

Kelly, you are absolutely darling with your cropped coif. Loves it!

Thank you for this post. I have a very short pixie cut, and every now and then, I lack the required confidence it takes to step outside in a short do' and I debate growing it out. Then I remember that I can have simpler style if I want because the focus is on my confidence, my face, and the hair is statement enough. That is why I love it, and that is why I will keep it.

I let my hair grow long after a sort of weird middle length layered cut I had a few years ago. Now they're really long and I love it (most of the time =). I still think that maybe one day I'll cut them short… But before I have to embrace my features more though short cut really exposes the face. Which totally suits you! =)

    Hi Kelly,

I really appreciate this post re short hair. And I totally agree. I recently chopped off my locks (same length as yours), and I have definitely HAD to adjust my makeup, wardrobe and accessory options. Long earrings are more fun now, but so are more feminine tops – to balance out the hair. I've also been wearing a lot more eye makeup, to avoid being completely androgynous. Although, to be honest, it's really refreshing to get to operate outside of the hetero normative framework of beauty.

Needless to say, I'm really enjoying Tilda Swinton's contributions to the hollywood style scene right now.

PS: Been reading your blog for some time now and this is my first comment. So thought I'd also take this opportunity to let you know that I think you do great work, and I really love your unique vision when it comes to mixology. :)

I absolutely adore your hair! My mum cut my hair short when I was 7 because she just knew I was meant to have short hair. Three decades later, and many attempts to grow it through those decades, it just never seems to grow – alas I have a short crop! And I do love it.

    Love the quote!

  • http://thebohemienne.wordpress.com/ The Bohemienne

Every time I grow out my hair, I end up cutting it right back off. I got a fantastic short cut 8 years ago and have never grown my hair out very much since then. My hair grows very quickly, so it can hit my shoulders before I've even realized it; but once I do, I head straight to the salon to have it chopped off. Though I've had a lot of different short cuts over the past few years, I just cut it into a pixie for the first time since I was a kid. I'm still playing around with it, but it's definitely liberating!

wow, that excerpt couldn't be any more true. i'm currently in the middle of growing my hair too (i've gotten to the bob stage so it's not so bad now). but between my pixie and bob, i've tried everything – putting my hair in a pirate ponytail, or curling it a little to give it more texture, or yes, wearing sunglasses all the time. you definitely can't hide behind short hair and i love that – because i felt surprisingly more confident.

(i'm still torn between growing out my long hair and keeping a pixie…i feel as if one day i will probably just decide on a whim to get my hair cut short again…)

  • http://www.blogger.com/profile/16494661890619810791 Caralee

I have always been a long hair girl, my hair is power, waist length, thick and enviable. My mom contastly told me I should cut it…."your face is too pretty to hide behind 20 ounds of hair." The morning of her funeral in august, I couldn't muster the stength to wash and style it, two and a half feet ended up on a little backwoods salon floor (the only place that would consent to cutting it). She was right, people can see ME now, I don't see myself ever going back, I revel in never being able to hide and I feel more feminine than ever.

  • http://www.blogger.com/profile/06374942632174728518 J.M.

I can totally relate to this. As a teenager I cut my long straight locks down to two inches. I'd decided to stop putting chemicles on my hair and let my curls grow back. At that pixie length, I loved it. My high cheekbones and angular face were magnified. The little touch of androgyny that it lent me felt powerful.

In between haircuts it grew very quickly into a messy Syd Barrett-esque coif. Still, I loved it. For a time I let it grow longer in all its wild glory, and frilly dress and capelets worked well. After cutting it again, I realized that those frou frou garments didn't quite work. In a sense, I have some long hair clothes, short hair clothes, and neutral (any length) clothes in my closet.

I've enjoyed the short journey. I started in the midst of highschool which made me feel very brave. But now older and looking for a change, I want to grow it past my shoulders again, and it is HARD. It is awkward. But I'm making myself commit. I haven't had long curly hair since childhood and I want to try it out. Still, after you cut you hair once it feels so easy to do it again. I have no doubt that somewhere down the road in life I'll be like my grandmother with a short, curly cut.

Your have a lovely face and your haircut emphasizes it beautfully. Thanks for posting about the article. I've never hear of it and I've just read it in its entirety. It describes the way I feel about short hair and fashion.

Love your short hair – it's what drew me to your blog and it's a big part of what makes your style so interesting and refreshing!

You look like a young Audrey Hepburn in this picture.
I think the short hair suits you well. And, on days when you crave a more romantic long hair feeling, there are wigs!

Fantastic timing on this post, as I am about to get my hair cropped. I am desperate to have it done but your post is a reminder of all the extra things I need to think about before I commit. Thanks for giving me something to ponder while I wait for the appointment.

I've been having my hair short since I was 7 yrs old. The first reason is I used to be a tomboy, grew up with 2 older sisters that are very feminine. And refuse to have the same hair as they are.

And growing up, having short hair turns out to be easier for me to live. No hair drying, and all the fuss.

I thought I could live 'green-er' with this hair. So yes, I've been cutting my hair every month ever since, & I lovee having short hair.

I'll be putting your beautiful quote in my blog sometime soon! Keep shining and beautiful dear.

Love this. I had my cropped to about half an inch long a couple of years ago now. I loved it and I completely get the thing about wanting to feel groomed, chic, and subtly feminine rather than girly. I've let mine grow out past my shoulders now- I have curly hair and the only problem I had with the short hair was that I never felt like me without curly locks! I'm sure once I've had long curly tresses again for a while, I'll crave chopping it all off again.
You look completely fabulous and I can only hope I can ever look as chic as you always seem to.

I love this post! Though my hair is not super super boy short I did cut off a foot recently making my hair go from past my shoulders to nearly up to my chin. Originally, I wanted boy short but as soon as I got to the hair salon I chickened out. Now, I am still craving the boy hair and hating my new hair. This post really inspired me to be daring and go all the way with it like I want! You look great! I think short hair is way more stylish and chic than any style of long hair.

I think a lot of people have said it before, but I adore your hair short. Mine is about the same length as yours right now, a little shorter on top – and I'm struggling with the decision to grow it out or not. And also, to be honest, last time I took my hair in for a trim, I showed my hair dresser your blog and said "I want my hair like hers."
So – I'd say, keep it, it suits you, and your style.

Do people ever tell you that you look a lot like Silver from 90210? The resemblance is so striking. Maybe it's the hair, but you are both beautiful.

on you it's really: the shorter the hair, the more feminine you look. i think the longer hair gives a more tomboyish look than than the short cut in this picture. it looks so so pretty on you!

I couldnt help but stay & comment.. a year ago, I had hair just a little longer than yours (but quite short).. after having a crop for a year, I decided to grow it.. lusting after long locks and ombre ends.. it's been tough.. i spent the whole summer in boater hats, and pinning my hair back. Having to get it constantly cut into a shape suitable for it to grow. But it was so worth it.. it touches my shoulders now.. and i can leave the house without caring about my hair. i'm anticipating just another year until it;'s where I want, but I am happy with it again. When its time to grow.. don't be afraid.. bite the bullet and stick at it.. 4 months of untidy hair are nothing really :)

While growing out your hair certainly can be very awkward, you make it look effortless! I'm really loving your hairstyle right now. Plus one of the benefits of growing it out is being able to constantly change up how you style it! Can't wait to see what funky ways to wear your hair while it grows that you come up with!

Had short hair for YEEEEEEEEARS!!! In total agreement!

I clicked on the link to the text. Good Lord, green text on black! Practically unreadable.

I agree that short hair makes a woman more exposed. I've always thought that she had to have better skin, bone structure and a better body to compensate.

I don't agree that women with bobs can't wear ruffles.

That's incredible to read. I feel like that was like reading everything I'm not. I have the longest hair and definitely feel sometimes I hide behind it. I WISH I had the confidence to make the chop!

I wish I had the confidence to wear my hair short (similar to yours)… every time I get it styled, by hairdresser BEGS me to cut it all off. I just can't muster up the courage! Love your blog, LOVE your style.. and most of all, LOVE your hair and everything behind it.
