{ before + after } bedroom furniture

i’ve always been a compulsive improver, a serious DIY addict. i can’t look at anything without thinking how i can make it better! this trait came in handy while decorating the apartment (on a budget!), as so many things can be transformed with a little patience and a few swathes of paint. here are two of my favorite makeovers:

this bedside stool was a surprise score. i’d been looking for a chic step stool for a while, but they are surprisingly hard to come by. when my guy texted a photo of this one to me (from a yard sale in the hamptons), i knew it had incredible potential. only problem was, the seller didn’t want to let it go without the matching (ginormous) bed frame. i insisted that he be persistent, threatening: “don’t you dare come home without it!!” in the end, it took four trips to the woman’s house over the course of two days, plus a whopping $30to wear her down. the day he returned home victorious, i set to work painting our prize!as you may have gathered from this photo, it serves a vital function to my pampered pup. while i’ll be the first to admit that pooch is spoiled rotten, installing steps for her to get into bed was more about my convenience than hers ~ i hated being woken up every time she got the urge to cuddle! i also use it as a perch while putting on shoes, and as a way to reach the purses at the tippy-top of my closet.

this dresser came from craigslist. it was pretty banged up (as you can see) ~ but it was cheap, and its architecture (especially the quietly curved lines) reminded me slightly of the step stool above. i really liked that it had lots of little drawers on top to store my sunnies and accessories. luckily, a bit of wood glue (for that taped-together leg), some sanding, and a couple coats of paint went a long way; this project took only a day!

i hope this inspires you to look at that next yard sale find with a more open mind ~ or even to rethink something already in your own home!!

I have to say I think I like the foot stool best in it's natural wood form, but I think you did a great job painting it and it does go with your decor. I love what you did to the dresser than one did need the paint to work.

Looks fabulous!! Much more elegant than the cardboard box full of books I used for my dog when he was a pup! He doesn't need one now (lab/collie mix) but I did have to get a new, higher bed so that he could still sleep under it. ;)

  • http://brunetteblogging.com Kim

    This is amazing !

  • adenaDesigns

Great job! I'm sure the pup appreciates the step stool. One note of caution for you though, when using the step stool. I had one like that once to access the tippy top of my closet. Because it doesn't have anything on the back side to stabilize it, it's very easy to tip over if you're standing on the top step (I know because it happened to me!) But it looks great!

Kelly I'm curious what paint you use??? I have repainted things and I've had it chip which does not look so cute- I was not going for shabby chic!

First off, I fricken love your apartment and upon seeing the pics wanted to immediately go home, throw everything out and start over.

I've tried to paint furniture myself but have never felt it to be an easy process! Is there something wrong with me? I've tried spray paint AND latex paint and don't like either. Am I just not cut out for it? Would you share your method with us?

you know the finish on that dresser? it's not woodgrain. it's an old early 20th century technique to use paint – yes, paint, by hand – to simulate woodgrain. it's a gorgeous thing, and today it's next to impossible to find anyone who can do that. and now it's gone.

Awesome! Thanks for sharing, I have a dresser from Craigslist that I want to paint black with white trim and I found a door at a garage sale for three bucks that I sanded and painted red and I use that as a headboard. Most people don't like DIY but I'm a sucker for a good one!

Oh wow I love your creativity. I always plan on doing DIY projects but am never sure where to start, I'm definitely using some of your ideas for inspiration. I love the B&W; blocking, totally my style. Now I want to hit up some yard sales and try to find some gems to work on!

Furniture restoration and re purposing is my passion! You did a great job with these… although I would have left the shoe rack as is… It has stunning wood work.
