{ costume of the day } taffeta & tulle

in 1936, legendary fashion editor diana vreeland began inspiring depression-weary americans with a harper's bazaar column called "why don't you...?" her suggestions were sometimes practical, sometimes tongue-in-cheek, but always stylish, outrageous, and sure to bring a smile. one can't help but love her backing of bubbly, as in: "why don't you...rinse your blond child's hair in dead champagne to keep its gold, as they do in france?" and "why don't you...remember how delicious champagne cocktails are after tennis or golf?"

one of my favorite vreeland maxims, "why don't you...tie black tulle bows on your wrists?" inspired my lust for this blue blouse from the rodarte for target collection. while other lasses longed for their signature leopard lace dress, i knew this bow-tie blouse would add a perfectly prim but flirty flourish to any ensemble.

pairing it with a boy's blazer and an almost awkwardly-long silk taffeta skirt made me feel like a schoolgirl in a sophia coppola film. frothy fabrics have such a wonderful way of transporting us...

Long time reader, first time commenter. I'm obsessed with black and navy at the moment and love the pieces in this look - particularly enamored with the lace tights paired with the insanely sexy heels and more demure skirt. Lovely proportions.

Your posts always put the biggest, happiest grin on my face. I love how you include darling little quips with your outfits - it ties everything together perfectly, just like the little bows around your wrists.

I was going to get that very same Rodarte for Target shirt but opted for the mustard set instead. Love it on you though! And the Vreeland words of wisdom...priceless. In my opinion, being creative and "thrifty" never goes out of style. I'm definitely going to look her up and find more of her helpful hints to share with my readers. Thanks again!

I love those bows!!!! Have you ever read Eleanor Dwight's biography of Diana Vreeland? It's really good. My FIL met her when he was in architecture school (her son was the department chair).

Love the D.V. quotes and more so, THIS outfit! It's beautiful and the pictures set this amazing tone. I'll now be obsessed with finding 1)tulle blouse with sleeve ties, and 2) a full taffeta skirt. Thanks for the inspiration!

i especially love the ring and tights, but the whole ensemble is gorgeous! i'm much too short to wear skirts of that length, but I still admire the look on statuesque ladies such as yourself!

This is so lovely, I'm really into the skirt length. I used to think that longer skirts made people look frumpy or stunted, but when you wear them with high heels they look so sooo good.

words cannot express how much i love your new hairstyle! it is so cute and pixie-like. you really can pull off anything, and i love that you aren't afraid to change it up all the time.

the longer skirt length works so well with this outfit, and those bows peeking out of your jacket sleeves are adorable. ~joelle

I can't believe it! I literally wore that blouse today, and I just love it. Everyone wanted to touch it and said, "Oo, mesh shirt!" Hehe. Only annoying bit is the wrist-bows often untie themselves when I coat/un-coat.

Such a pretty outfit. My mom has a black blouse like that. It's a bit more formal but can still pass as something casual. I'm not going to be afraid to wear it. Not after seeing your outfit.
